Avoiding Airplane Colds

Airplane travelers are more susceptible to contracting the common cold because of higher transmission rates and weakened immune systems. Contrary to popular belief, recycled air is not to blame because of sophisticated air filtration systems used on board planes. Low humidity is the more likely cause. Low humidity dries up the mucus in our nose and throat, which is the first line of defense in fighting germs. Being in close contact of many other people certainly doesn't help, either.

Here are some tips for maintaining your health and keep your immune system working:

  1. Stay hydrated. Sip water regularly, and avoid sodas, coffee, and alcohol.
  2. Keep your hands clean.
  3. Keep your mouth clean. Brush your teeth and use a mouthwash.
  4. Take your vitamins. Although this is unproven, many travelers swear by it.
  5. Wear a face mask. (Especially if you don't care about making friends.)
